Thirty and a Half Carré - silk scarf
An abstraction born from the streets of New York — Thirty and a Half ( West 53rd Street )is one of those photographs people always assume is a painting. And that’s precisely why it remains one of my favourite designs.
Taken opposite MoMA, standing in the middle of the street, I shot through those heavy orange water-filled barriers and the red netting wrapped around them. In the background: nothing more than reflections on a freight elevator — but together they formed this graphic, architectural composition of matte black, soft patches of light, and neon-red geometry.
It’s a piece that never reveals itself fully — modern, industrial, a little mysterious. Over the years it’s become one of the most versatile artwork prints I’ve ever made, appearing as silk pyjamas, a screen-printed room divider, even masks during the pandemic. Now it arrives as a 71×71 cm silk carré — minimal, graphic, urban, unmistakably New York.
